Winter Travel and the New ATV

Travel back to the cabin was made easier this year with the purchase of 2003 Yamaha 660 Grizzly ATV.  While the x-country skis still made the trip they were happily left back at the truck and replaced by ATV tire chains!

Upon arriving to our parking spot near Sidnaw we were greeted with a dead battery on the 4X4.  Prepared for such a challenged (from lessons learned in 2010, check out earlier blog story!) a quick jump had us up and running. Initial trails were difficult to pass w/ snow depths ~24"+ but once we made it to more commonly traveled snowmobile trails, our efforts were eased and pace increased. I will say the tire chains were a necessity and very impressive as they would just keep digging to traction.  We finally met our match at the base of our driveway where drifting snow depths exceeded 36".

Getting around off trail was very difficult but well worth it as the sun and fresh snow were magical.

Trails cut between cabin and outhouse and cabin and lake make for an interesting and very efficient network of travel.  Its interesting to observe only a few miscalculated steps that were probably caused by fatigue on a return trip.

And yes a few fish were caught for a fish fry but this was far from easy.  Finessing light biters in below zero temperatures with blowing winds and freezing holes can be challenging.

Fresh Coat of Stain

Cabin w/ fresh coat of stain and freshly peeled spuce logs for porch rail.  Spent a week up north while participating in LVD's Wild Rice Camp. We collected 400lbs of seed for next years restoration projects!  Its a great time of year!!! This view is north looking south.

Here's our rain barrel catching roof water for our ourside shower.  This view is from the south looking north.

Portable solar panel charges 12 volt batteries providing us just enough power to keep LED lighting up cabin at night.

Inside of the cabin after finsihing loft and moving beds upstairs freeing up all kinds of space.

The loft.  I'm looking forward to finishing ceiling and hiding insulation forever.
